I don’t understand people who don’t like to volunteer. As pretentious as that sounds, I say this for completely selfish reasons. Volunteering is by far one of the best ways to feel really good about yourself for free - all you need is a little time. And as long as you’re not doing a shit job, even if you go in with a scowl, you come out feeling good about yourself anyways. Why would you not want that? 

Of course, this opens up a whole slew of conflicts centered around the general ideas of:
“Is it morally correct to help others because you want to help yourself?”
“Does it matter what your motives are as long as you are providing aid?”
… and… the overarching umbrella:
“Is there any act that an individual commits that is truly selfless?”

The last one’s a bit tricky… I mean, even Jean Valjean from Les Miserables - who spent his entire life repenting for stealing a loaf of bread and giving his soul to the rescued orphan girl Cosette and then spent the last years of his life being ignored by her because of a misunderstanding that she wouldn’t let him explain - ends up dying with everyone he loves gathered around his deathbed, lamenting how they misunderstood him, etc…. And he turns into a bloody freakin’ angel, with all the golden halo of light and glowy-ness and glory that anyone could wish for…
